One of my favorite activities while in Minnesota was kayaking. Our VRBO had numerous kayaks, giving any who wanted to the chance to go out and explore the waters surrounding the house! I made it a point to get out and see what I could see. You will never guess what appeared right in front of me during my first kayak excursion.
AN OTTER!!!
I took this as a sign to get out and explore the lake on a kayak whenever the weather allowed.

There was also the Loon. I had never glimpsed this bird before....and boy was I amazed when I heard their call during one of our evening boat cruises.
Isn't the sound just mesmerizing??
The Loon has four different calls:
The Wail - A long mournful sound used to communicate with family members
The Yodel - A series of rapid notes used to establish territory
The Tremolo - A quavering sound used when the Loon is alarmed or excited
Common Call - A short, sharp sound used for communication
This could be the Common Call or the Yodel...what do you think??

The Loon is Minnesota's State Bird and there is said to be over 12,000 common Loons in Minnesota during the Summer...WOW!!!
Kayaking and water bird watching...
Two more Lake Life favorites for sure!

ReplyDeleteI am a little green with envy that you had this experience! The otter seemed unbothered by your observance... on the other hand, I suspet that wast the Loon's tremolo, as the visiting yellow 'duck' might have been seen as a threat! YAM xx
Love the loon! I've never seen one in person but I adore their calls! What a peaceful paddle with so much wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLoons are a bit looney! Love the otter watching it munch on the blade of grass. Great shots of MN nature.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see so much wildlife up close while on the water.
ReplyDeleteI could sit there for hours watching the wildlife. Beautiful and what a wonderful adventure.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the pups and my best to their peeps. ♥
Lulu: "Our Dada says he remembers seeing otters and loons when he and Mama used to go out canoeing in the Adirondacks! No pelicans, though ..."
ReplyDeleteI would love to spend time on that lake...or any lake!
ReplyDeleteBeth I know you loved seeing the otter...and were tempted to play with it.
ReplyDeleteThe loon has 4 vocals...their own language.
The trill would be lovely set to YAM's harp

I agree, I'd want to kayak as much as possible if I were there. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou can commune with nature on a whole other level on a boat
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful interactions with the wildlife! It would be hard to contain my enthusiasm with those fascinating critters. Thanks for taking us along on your kayak travels.
