Nature Friday at Bosque del Apache

Howdy y'all and welcome to Nature Friday!

Earlier this month Mama visited the
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge to do some bird watching! Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the park during the Winter months.  It seems a bunch of different birds like to make this park their home during this time and don't like dogs chasing or barking at them.

No big loss for me...the park is about 2 hours south of Albuquerque, and I do NOT want to be in the car that long!

Fortunately, Mama took lots of pictures to share!

Snow geese are one of the species that enjoy wintering in the park.

You can see why they are called Snow geese...

Just look how white their feathers are!

Let's see what else the Refuge has to offer!

Mama says it reminds her a bit of the Arcata Marsh where she used to hike in Northy North California...

There is a lot of marsh land

...and little streams.

She spotted this cute little Say's Phoebe Flycatcher

and this Sand Hill Crane. People come from all around the country to see the Sand Hill Cranes that fly to the Refuge for the Winter.

But it's not just birds at the Wildlife Refuge....

Mama caught a glimpse of this Javelina too!

She even saw a Wild Turkey!

We'll wrap up Nature Friday with a Greater Roadrunner.....

Mama called him a Rebel Roadrunner, because he was headed straight into the part of the park that was closed BOL!!

We hope you enjoyed this week's glimpse of the
Bosque del Apache. Maybe Mama will take Rosy back when dogs are allowed in the Fall!

We hope everyone gets to explore some kind of nature this weekend!

Show us your nature! It can be flowers, your current weather, a scene out of your window, or maybe a picture from a vacation, walk or other journey! Any kind of nature picture will do! If you don't see a link below, click HERE  to go to our Hoppity Page.

  1. Gail and I loved this visit to Bosque del Apache. We think the snow geese are handsome, the flycatcher very pretty and the javelina not so much.
But for me, the Rebel Roadrunner is the tops - a fellow after my own heart for sure!

PS You did a great job as guide Sunny - most smartly dressed too.

  6. My first viewing of snow geese and they are so beautiful I think they are even more beautiful than the Canadian geese and I love those too. And there’s so many of them. We have sandhill cranes here and they don’t have to go north so I guess that’s not any of ours up there visiting you. I love the little waterway in the marsh absolutely beautiful

  11. We had a wild turkey in our backyard this morning, but no one told us pups about it until it was gone. We don't have any road runners around here, though. That's a great place to walk through, and we know Rosy will have a great time there this fall. XOX Xena, Lucy, Chia and Riley
