Lake Life - MN Backyard Wildlife Wednesday

One of my favorite activities while in Minnesota was kayaking. Our VRBO had numerous kayaks, giving any who wanted to the chance to go out and explore the waters surrounding the house! I made it a point to get out and see what I could see.  You will never guess what appeared right in front of me during my first kayak excursion.

AN OTTER!!!
I took this as a sign to get out and explore the lake on a kayak whenever the weather allowed.

There were also a wonderful selection of birds to see. From pelicans to egrets and even the elusive blue heron(who never stayed still long enough for me to get a picture).

There was also the Loon. I had never glimpsed this bird before....and boy was I  amazed when I heard their call during one of our evening boat cruises.

Isn't the sound just mesmerizing??

The Loon has four different calls:
The Wail - A long mournful sound used to communicate with family members
The Yodel - A series of rapid  notes used to establish territory
The Tremolo - A quavering sound used when the Loon is alarmed or excited
Common Call - A short, sharp sound used for communication

This could be the Common Call or the Yodel...what do you think??

The Loon is Minnesota's State Bird and there is said to be over 12,000 common Loons in Minnesota during the Summer...WOW!!!

Kayaking and water bird watching...
Two more Lake Life favorites for sure!
