As you
might remember, at the beginning of May, Sunny and I visited Dr. Jeff. He is a nice, knowledgeable Behavioralist(and licensed Vet) and we spent quite awhile together(over two hours) discussing Sunny and her issues. I was very impressed as he looked at both the
physical and behavioral aspects of things going on with Sunny.
Physical Issues
After getting an extensive medical/behavioral history, Dr Jeff took Sunny to an exam room and gave her a full physical where he discovered a couple of
physical reasons she may short tempered. First up, she had 2 broken
teeth. This was a BIG surprise because, when she had been to the
Vet, just a few weeks before, she said Sunny's teeth looked great. But, after some X-Rays, Sunny ended up at the Vet to get the two teeth pulled, and the rest cleaned.
The next physical issue Dr. Jeff found, were Sunny's back knees. We knew she had luxating patellas, our vet in California took X-Rays and advised us to keep an eye on them. Dr. Jeff recommended an orthopedic consult and X-Rays, after that we determined the time had come to get those knees fixed. Unfortunately, the surgery has a 12 week total recover time. Because they may be causing her pain, we decided to get on the schedule as soon as possible. On July 21st, Sunny will have surgery done on both of her knees to correct the patellas(knee caps). This should guarantee our baby girl isn't in pain.
Behavioral Issues
After discussing Sunny's physical issues, we moved on to her behavioral issues. The thing Dr. Jeff noticed most of all about Sunny, as he observed her during the visit, is she couldn't relax. Granted, we were at a Vet's Office, but she was pacing and barking at every little noise. She gets the same way at home and, when really anxious, will "go after" Rosy or Jake(no blood was ever spilled). Obviously, this wasn't good for any pup involved. Dr. Jeff diagnosed Sunny with a Genetic Anxiety Disorder and has her on medication that seem to be doing the trick. The medication, along with behavior modifications(for pawrents and pup) seem to be working. Sunny is relaxed, smiling more and most importantly, we haven't had an altercation in the past few weeks.
Getting Sunny healed, both physically and behaviorally, will keep us home most of the Summer of 2022. Fortunately, this may be just the summer for staying home. You may have noticed the lack of Cece trips. CeCe has been having some technical issues and is in
the "RV Hospital." We had to cancel our May trip and we have our fingers crossed we can get in the two
weekend trips we have scheduled for June and July, but right now it doesn't look good. But hey, with the price of gas skyrocketing,
this may be a good thing!
Although it looks to be a long Summer, it will be well worth it. We can already see a change in Sunny's attitude and are we're looking forward to taking her on lots of pain free, relaxed trips next Summer. Plus, I think it will take the whole Summer just for the pups(and Ed and I) to explore the whole backyard!
wehave all fingers and paws crossed for the surgery and we hope it will be a sunny summer for you all...literally .... hugs and lots of potp
ReplyDeleteSometimes, tending to one's flock at home has to take priority over venturing far afield. I do hope that when Sunny's kneecaps are fixed this helps her become a happier and more relaxed dog whose temperament will start to live up to her name.
ReplyDeleteI also hope that Cece can be made well again without too much extra expense. As for fuel costs, it might make you feel better about prices in your country if I tell you that our current £1.75 per litre equates, in USA terms, to over $8 per gallon!
Cheers,
Gail.

ReplyDelete...and diesel costs nearly 10[/ltr more! Just when I was thinking that I might get a car again before too long...
Back to the important bit. I very nearly said to Sunny the other day on one of her photos that she was looking a lot more at ease playing the model... now it seems I wasn't imagining it! I am so glad that Dr Jeff proved to be all that was promised; the dental issue is major - well know how sore toothies can cause misery. As for the sore knees... well Sunny has my sympawthees! It surely will be a big summer for different reasons than you had thought, but yes, that backyard is quite something and I am sure the time spent now is surely going to yield rewards for years to come Poor CeCe though. I hope she gets better soon, too! Sending you all lots of Love and Light and POTP... YAM xx
Wow Sunny, for a youngster, you have a lot going on. Sorry to hear about all the past and upcoming appts but hopefully they will help you feel better. We are taking a travel break, but mostly because we don't have anything exciting to travel to until perhaps August. Enjoy your time at home in your new home.
ReplyDeleteFingers and paws are crossed that the professionals will get you all better soon, Sunny!
ReplyDeleteNiece Sunny...bless your little heart. Aunty will be sending you loads of healing purrs. I'm thankful the teeth are gone and you have meds that are working. CeCe and you both need a summer of healing. AND the gasoline is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ so expensive. You can all stay home to enjoy your first summer in your beautiful new home
ReplyDeleteHugs aunty c
We're glad to hear Sunny has her teeth fixed and the meds seem to be helping. We will keep our paws crossed that all goes well for the knee surgeries and she makes a full recovery.
ReplyDeleteYou're doing all you can to make sure Sunny has the best possible life. You're a wonderful mom and dad.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and week. Scritches all around and my best to your peeps. ♥
Congrats on digging deeper with Miss Sunny. Hopefully with new meds and behavioral adjustments, she will feel better and be kinder to the whole gang. Sorry about the trip(s) but I'm sure it will all be worth it if baby girl feels more like traveling with ease. 🤞🏼
ReplyDeleteEverything costs so much now days including surgery and medical needs but Sunny is worth it and I hope all goes well
ReplyDeleteSunny, pain can make one very grumpy - that is for sure. You are so lucky to have such great parents who only want what is best for you. Misty had two knee surgeries back to back. Yes, it IS a long recovery (and very $$$$$$$), but that is what loving peeps do for us. We wish you and your siblings the very best. We wish we could help you explore that pawesome yard.
ReplyDeleteWoos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
It is always good to find some answers to help you get to solutions ! POTP for continued peace among our pups !
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the meds are helping with the attitude and I'm sorry there is gonna be surgery coming up. Being out of pain will be so good though.
ReplyDeletePrecious Sunny, just the pain you were experiencing would cause a grumpiness. We are glad you have such wonderful pawrents who love you so much, and are helping you feel better all over. Lots of love and pawrayers, Lucy, Xena and Chia
