Happy Day Trip with Rosy(Part 1)-Soda Dam & Valles Caldera

Last weekend, the pawrents surprised me with a special "Rosy Day Trip"(Sunny is not into road trips, unless we are staying in CeCe, so she held down the house).

We decided to explore a little of the Northeastern part of the state! Today, on the first part of the journey, I'm going to show you Soda Dam and Valle Caldera.

I was a little hesitant at first, Mama has been known to take me to the dogtur or vet when we get in JeeJee. Luckily, I saw that Daddy was driving, and settled in and relaxed.

There are beautiful red rocks along the Jemez River, within 30 minutes of our home, and is always a favorite ride of the pawrents. I was glad I could finally tag along and see the beauty for myself!

We might have mentioned Soda Dam before as Mama took a ride out there last year. But this was the first time Daddy and I had visited.

This 7000 year old natural rock formation was formed by calcium carbonate bubbling up from hot springs beneath the dam.

The Jemez River runs through the dam creating a cool "Soda" natural bridge(in this case "Soda" is referencing sodium carbonate...just because Mama was wondering, she thought you might be too).

During most of our ride we skirted the Valles Caldera National Reserve. When we saw this Valle Grande tourist area, we decided to take a break to stretch our leggies!

The Valles Caldera National Preserve, in the Jemez Mountains, is the crater of a volcano that erupted over 1.2 million years ago. The crater is dormant but not extinct.  Now Mama says we could go on and on about the great big volcano under New Mexico that heats multiple hot springs in the area, along with other signs of volcanic activity....but to me, there was something MUCH more interesting that volcanoes and stuff...

Daddy and I were doing our hiking thing when I spied....out in the field...

 PRAIRIE DOGGIES!!!!

Now that's something to be happy about!

There were prairie doggies everywhere we turned. This one thought he was hiding from me....

If I didn't have Daddy to walk, I would totally get you Mr. Prairie Doggie Phhhhwap!!!!

It's always fun finding a place that it is interesting for the pawrents with something fun for me to see too!

Mama made a video with all the sights we saw during the first leg of our trip:

You can watch it HERE on our YouTube Channel too.

We'll be back next Tuesday with more road trip fun!

  10. We can't help but wonder what Sunny did while you were gone. Are you sure she wasn't messing with your toys? BOL

That was a very scenic ride and what impressive rock formation. We would love to have seen those prairie dogs too and maybe given them a bit of a chase.

  14. Charlee: "So if you put a tap into the rock formation, what kind of soda would you get out? Coke?"
Java Bean: "Ayyy, Mexican Coke, I hope. That's the one that's made with real sugar instead of corn syrup!"
Lulu: "Isn't anyone going to say anything about the squirrels???"
