Cuervo Ghost Town

Sunny: It was a dark and stormy night when we rolled into Cuervo...
Rosy: SUNNY! It was actually a nice bright afternoon. Mama just did spooky things to the pictures to make them
look a little more menacing.

Have a seat around our campfire and let's learn a bit more about Cuervo, NM

Unlike many ghost towns located off the beaten path, Cuervo is easy to find.  The small abandoned town is located along Interstate 40 between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari.

Cuervo(CUHR-voh) means Raven in Spanish. We should have known this because this scary Raven met us at the stop sign entering the town. *shudder*

The town was founded in 1901 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf railroad was expanding from the panhandle of Texas to central and eastern New Mexico.

Unfortunately, the railway decided to change plans and used both Tucumcari and Santa Rosa for their
main delivery routes.

The town had the chance to grow when Route 66 was built through their town, but before it had a chance to really prosper...

Interstate 40 was built and Cuervo never established itself as a tourist destination.

It was then most residents fled the area for better prospects.

Believe it or not, although the town is now un-incorporated(it's post office closed in 2011), there are still 58 residents that call Cuervo home. We saw one auto repair shop/junkyard that looked like someone might have lived in,  but that was about it.  We didn't meander through the dirt roads though, because Cuervo is known for some pretty creepy "non-ghost" related incidents.

This is the former Catholic Church of  Cuervo. You might notice it has a new roof, which we thought was very interesting. After some research we fund out it was most likely built to keep people out. We aren't going to get into particulars, but if you search Cuervo, NM church incident, you will find some pretty disturbing "non-ghost" information that we didn't know about until researching this post.

As most of you know, most humans are much scarier than their ghosts.

Here is a video Mama made, showing all of the houses we saw.

You can also watch it HERE, on YouTube

We hope you enjoyed our little Campfire Story today. Cuervo sure is an interesting Ghost Town and just one of many here in New Mexico!

We bet Mama and Daddy will find another one for us to visit soon!!

Indoor Nature Friday

OK, did someone press the September Fast Forward Button?
I can't believe we're a week away from the last Friday in September!
(Don't forget YAM-Aunty's FFF next week!)

For the first Autumn post of 2022, I am going to show some of the nature pictures I found on Mama's phone from her Weekend Getaway to Nashville, Tennessee! These are all from the hotel where she stayed. I heard her telling Daddy the Gaylord Opryland Resort was bigger than many of the Casinos they had stayed in Las Vegas with a Conservatory rivaling the Bellagio

Here are just some of the flowers Mama found:

The Costus barbatus or "Red Tower" Flower is a member of the Ginger family, If this looks like something you have seen here before you are right! They are found in tropical climates like Hawaii...and Mama and Daddy remember seeing them and, of course, Mama took a picture of them (the post is HERE is you want to take a look)!

Here we have a Brassia
Spider Orchid. Isn't it interesting with the brown splotches?

The popular Bird of Paradise. This flower really does look like a bird!

 Some classic Purple Orchids

Such a beautiful (Aechmea Fasciata) Bromeliad!

Here's another Hawaii flashback, the Heliconia, or
Lobster Claw Flower!

The hotel conservatory also hosts bunch of water features!!

There were little waterfalls with Angel's Trumpet flowers growing above,

and streams leading to a large covered fountain!

The most impressive feature was the 5 story waterfall
positioned just as you walk into the conservatory! It was especially beautiful early in the morning, before things got too crowded!

You could even go behind the waterfall....where I suppose Mama took this picture.
She gets so artsy sometimes!

Thanks for joining us for a look around the Gaylord Opryland Resort Gardens.

We hope you all enjoy the first weekend of Fall, and everyone has a chance to get out to see some outdoor nature!!

Sunny Pupdate

 Sunny's surgery yesterday went well,
seems some of the soft tissue around her patella loosened up, but it's all fixed up and she will be home later today!
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers!

Nature Friday Flowers at the ABQ Botanic Garden

Wow Rosy, Friday sure did roll around fast this week!
It sure did Sunny, mostly because Mama and Daddy have been running around throwing things in boxes!
That's right, I almost forgot...it's almost moving week! Wahoo!!
Next week, while we are moving, we have prerecorded blogs ready to go. We aren't sure how much time we will have to visit everyone...
You've got that right Rosy, we'll be exploring our new backyard, barking at our new neighbors...
Well, we'll also be chasing bunn.....I mean unpacking all our clothes and toys too!!

But don't worry, we'll be back in time for next week's Nature Friday and we have some pretty cool stuff pre-recorded for next week too!

Anyway...we digress, let's get to this week's Nature Friday from the Albuquerque Botanic Garden!! Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed in the park.  Even with that horrible rule in place, Mama was pretty impressed on how big the park was compared to the Humboldt Botanical Gardens. Mama didn't have time to visit the whole park in the time she was there but she did see some pretty Spring flowers!!

There is a big castle as soon as you walk in the park!  This park is VERY child friendly and a lot of their exhibits are geared towards children.

 There were daffodils everywhere

All different kinds too. Here are some with orange rimmed trumpets!

So how big do you think the bunnies in our new backyard get, Rosy?
I don't know Sunn.....
What??
OH, sorry Mama, we'll get back to describing YOUR walkie....

There was an atrium which had some fun tropical flowers like this Bromiliad,

a Bottle brush plant/flower,

and this Clivia Miniata! Aren't the orange and yellow flowers
pretty?

They even had Calla Lilies, just like back in California!

When she was heading back to the car (to get home in time for afternoon cookies) she came across this pretty hybrid tulip the "Tulipa Ancilla"
(thank goodness for Google picture search)

The least thing Mama saw as she headed out of the park was this beautiful Red Breasted Robin! A sure sign that Spring is here!!

Mama made a video of her visit to the park if you like that kind of thing(videos without dogs!).
Plus she has a park membership, so I'm sure we'll be seeing more of the park through the seasons.

You can also watch it HERE, on YouTube

We're wishing everyone a pawsome weekend filled with flowers!!!
