Happy VPKC Friday!!!

Today is going to be VPKC FUN Friday!! The Mama says that every 3rd Friday of the month while we are doing VPKC Club (until this Halloween) we will have a fun day...but Mama says she still wants some "A-WARE-NESS" stuff...so I will hand it over to her for JUST A MINUTE...Right MAMA..??

Well Dory, maybe 2 minutes...Today I want to let you know about dog socializing . In my own experience, I know that Dory benefited SO MUCH by socializing her. We used trips to the Lake for Dive (dog) Club nights, walks at Town Lake and a Pet**art visits and puppy class. Now she is the social butterfly! Believe it or not, we also socialized Bilbo...maybe even more than Dory with the same routine...and he has turned out to be..well..Bilbo..He is not into crowds.He prefers to sleep upstairs when we have company or a party (this is where he was for the Baby Shower last week). This is most likely a result of his medical "issues". But he would much rather just hang out with(and boss around) his Mom and Dad that anything else.

Today I have decided to honor Miss Sassy Sasha 's( **love you little girl**) wishes and go to Pet Amore and not the "man who's name we do not mention" for some examples on how to socialize your dogs:

Introduce your dog to as many people as possible in a non-threatening environment. Make sure that you introduce males, females, children and adolescents. Supervise all interaction, and make sure that each experience is a positive one for your dog. If your dog has enough encounters with friendly males that give him biscuits, or kibbles for example, he is likely to seek out males in the future and not be aggressive towards them, or suspicious of them.

Have small dinner parties at your home to introduce your new dog to your friends. Again, make sure your friends Ooh and Ahh, over your dog, and give him lots of affection.

Take your dog on neighborhood walks with other owners. This will give your

dog a chance to interact with other dogs, and observe their behavior. Especially, if you have a puppy, your dog will start to imitate the Leash Behavior of the other dog. (No one trains a dog better than another dog!)

Take your dog to obedience classes

Take your dog to dog parks

Introduce your dog to your neighbor's friendly cat

If allowed take your dog to a local farm, petting zoo

Take your dog to local pet shops, like Petco, or PetSmart, etc. (most pet shops welcome canines) There they will not only meet and see other animals and people, but they will be bombarded with tons of smells to captivate them

Invite your neighbor's over to meet the dog, (this is also a good idea because it gives your neighbors a chance to meet him/her, and if they ever notice your dog escaping the yard for example, they will know who to bring the dog back to!)

If you have children, invite some of their classmates over after school

If you don't have children walk your dog near a school when school lets out

Bring your dog on an elevator ride with you

Take your dog to doggy day care

Walk your dog in a crowded part of town

Take your dog to a groomer

Take your dog for a ride in your car (not just when you go to the Vet)

This week I will get Bilbo out more...and see what happens!

How did you all socialize your fur-kids??

MMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

My turn, My turn....!!!

First..the trivia question..that is what the "Fun" in Fun Friday is for! Mama says you can find the answer by searching these here interrnets!

What actor who played a famous TV Vampire was "discovered" while walking his fur-kid??

The first person to answer this question correctly in the "Bark-ments" below will have 20 green papers sent to the Lago Vista PAWS (aka Lifelong Friends) shelter here in Texas in there name.

Good Luck to all my Fur-iends!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news....I have a NEW UNCLE but shhhhhhhh don't tell Grandma...it's a SURPRISE!!
Right now, I just call him Uncle and he is living with my Human Uncle and Cousins until he goes to Grandpa and Grandma's next Friday...Here are picture's my Cousin K took with her phone last night and this morning.
Let's all give my human uncle a paws up for keeping Fur Uncle (along with his Rottie Jenny AND Pretty Angel Dog AND two kids that start school on Monday) for the next week. He rocks!! I will have Mommy bring the clicky flashy box next week when I get to meet Fur Uncle!!
I hope everyone has a PAWSOME VPKC Friday!!!!
  3. Hi Dory,
    My Mom didn't know the answer and neither did I but I made her use that Google thingy and now she got all smart and says the answer is David Boreanaz.
    I like your Uncle, did you know that I am part of that kind of dog? Mom says I'm a Goldendoodle, sometimes she calls me a noodle! Go figure!
    Well anyway, have a great day and I hope I...I mean...I hope my Mom was right!
  5. Cute puppy. I like some people and some dogs... others I don't like. I make instant judgements and there's no changing my mind. Does that make me a bad dog?
  6. Tank...that makes you a cautious dog...I am sure it is because of the apricot coloring in you...White llasa puppies are too trusting I am sure.
  7. Hi Dory,
    Grrreat post as usual. Very interesting and I totally agree with you about socializing your dog.
    No one wants to be around a grumpy dog. Besides, they're scarry and can be very dangerous.
    Thanks for the spreading the word and I am sure there many people out there who are not aware of the importance of training your dog to be a good dog.
    Good job, Dorey and thanks again.
    Luv,
    Riley and Star.
  12. i don't know the answers dory - but i am extremely well socialized - never met a big or little bi-ped I don't like - like most dogs - unless they are PIB's [pain in the butt's] - in which case i simply ignore their little PIB attitudes - and i really like cats - until mom started to work i went everywhere - now that she works - and visits vets every day i'm stuck at home - figure that one out - i go to target - but not to the vet!!!!
  14. Our Dad is a vampire fan so he says that answer up above here is correct - David Boreanaz or whatever. Those are all great ideas for socializing dogs. One of the biggest mistakes a lot of folks make is taking puppies when they are too young - no sooner than 8 weeks minimum!!!
    Have a great weekend, the OP Pack
  15. woowowooooooo!!!!What a wonderful post sweet Dory!!!
    Thanks for your suggestion!!!!!
    We think to be a good example for our little sisyer Maya....
    We teach her to walk at leash...to play...to make a friends...
    And mommy invited people and children at home...we go often by car...we go to swim...so Maya will grow not insure and fearful....
    Are we doing the good things dear Dory???
    AND CONGRATS on your new very beautiful uncle!!!!!!
    Have a wonderful weekend from your VPKC friends!!!!!!!!
  17. My favorite socializing thing is there is a little daycare in our neighborhood and when we walk by, the little kids get to come out and pet me. I am surrounded by 8 kids and love every minute of it. I never met a peoples I didn't like, or a dog. I might met some agressive ones someday but we'll see when that comes!
    Kisses,
    Stella
    Your Uncle is very good looking as well. I hope he has a great time with his new family!
    The tall guy says I am TOO socialized. I want to meet everyone. Unfortunately, I get too excited when I meet new people, so we are working on that.
  20. Hi Dory,
    Thanks for the tips. Mom did take me around to lots of places when I was a pup so I would be well socialized but it didn't work that well. I hate it when strange hoomans pat me on the head before I say they can. Banjo instantly likes every dog and hooman he meets though.
    Congrats to Lucy on winning the trivia question.
  21. Hi Dory! I like to socialize with everyone, however, if anyone gets in my face ugly like, I jump back and then I flash the jaws of death at em for being RUDE!!! I'm always astonished that someone would be rude to me...but I just can't let em dis' me like that without telling them off. At the doggie park, if any of the big boys get bully with me, I run to HER side and SHE tells em off! I love parties at the house. Everyone pets us and gives us sneakie treaties when SHE's not looking. And when the scrapbook ladies get together, they let me play with their scraps.
    Have a fun weekend.
  25. Dory first that is a scary picture that you are in, please be careful. Thank you to Dory Momma for mentioning me, it makes me feel loved and also thank you for not mentioning C.M.grrrrrrrrrr. Mom says that is really good advice. She is going to make a post this weekend about some good progress I have made lately. She is afraid she talks too much about my sassiness but lots of times I am a good girl. My Mom is a Halloween nutty crazy person so she is excited for your Vampire posts. Thanks for loving me, I love you and Bilbo too.
  27. Hi Dory
    Sorry we are late you must have posted after the computer went to bed for the night!
    We guess someone will already have answered your vampire question but our guess is Christopher Lee.
    We liked all the information about socialisation. We both really missed out on this especially Martha who remains very wary of new situations.
    We have decided not to rush her but we agree it is important.
    How lovely to see and hear about your uncle - he looks adorable.
    Have a great weekend
    love
  34. Good info on socialization. Thanks for sharing as so many people have NO IDEA! Mom used to watch a show called Dark Shadows when she was very young about a Vampire called Barnabas Collins, but after seeing a Christopher Lee movie, she gave up vampires... to many nightmares! Her sister is a big Forever Knight fan and has written several fanzines.
    Anyway, it's after 1 a.m. and we have to get to bed, so we can get up early for church. Catch you later! OC and the Country Corgi Crew
