Squirrel Training101

Do you know that I, Rosy, have never seen a REAL squirrel?? That's right, we don't have squirrels here on the Northy North Coast of California...
The closest I've come to seeing one is having Mama point out some blurry furry thing while we were on one of our road trip (and then telling me I couldn't run after it to investigate!
#meanmama)

With tomorrow being Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, there has been a bunch of reminiscing about how my Angel Sister Dory was the bestest Squirrel hunter in all of Texas(at least in the Austin Area)!

Dory taught Arty and Jakey how to squirrel hunt, so I asked Arty and Jakey if they could teach me using Mr. Sebastian the squirrel! Now Sebastian can't run so Arty asked Mama to throw him so I could practice chasing a squirrel.

Catching wasn't so hard...Arty then told me to shake, shake, shake him...so I practiced that for awhile...

Arty explained that real squirrels will run away and so he added an extra level of difficulty by trying to grab the squirrel and take him away...he also said real squirrels bite and so he tried to bity face me until Mama reminded him that maybe he shouldn't bity me so hard...

After that, Arty said I was ready for the next level...playing squirrel tuggy with Jakey. He said if I could get the squirrel away from Jakey...I would be ready if a squirrel ever came my way!

It was tough, but I finally wrestled the squirrel away from Jakey and Arty says I am now ready to chase squirrels and be a Big Squirrel Hunter just like Angel Dory!!
Noooow...I just have to find a squirrel brave enough to come to my yard and play!!!

MEANWHILE.....

  2. Arty and Jakey are such excellent teachers. But you know what? By the end of this post I was actually feeling sorry for Sebastian the Squirrel...

  3. How awesome that your brothers gave you squirrel lessons. Sebastian was very patient and brave for his part in your training. ~Bessie Pup

  4. We rarely saw a squirrel in Germany, but when we moved to the US, they were everywhere. Mom says Katie and I almost killed her on walks until she was able to get us under control. How sad you don't have squirrels where you live. For some reason mom finds it a good thing???

  8. You did a great job learning from your brothers the art of squirrel hunting. We hope Sebastian survived Jakey's jaws of doom so you can play with him again some time.

  10. I had no idea there was anywhere in the US that squirrels didn't live and torment dogs. I had one in a front yard tree the other day that kept hitting me with empty nut shells while I was trying to work outside. When I yelled at it to stop, I swear it laughed at me. They are cheeky things.

  11. I wish that I had known about you not having met a squirrel before, Rosy. Mom says there were more squirrels than peeps living in Hamden when we lived in our apartment. You and I could have hunted them all day long together!

  12. Good job on the part of Arty and Jakey, but somehow or other, we think they enjoyed their training role as much as you did.

  16. You did great. Ours like to run on top of the fence, so we get a great workout chasing them there too. Mom worries less about the squirrels and more about the bunnies who tend to freeze and are much slower. She doesn't seem as thrilled at the idea of us catching them as with the idea of us chasing them out of the yard.

  17. Squirrels are the MOST FUN EVER!!! We used to have tons of squirrels in Louisiana but there is not a single one in our yard in Texas. We do have some on our trails so I do get to bark at them and watch them scatter. Keep practicing because your brothers are right...they are fast! Your pal, Pierre
