Fun Times in Alamogordo

We had a great time in the small town of Alamogordo and are happy to report it was both fun AND relaxing. We arrived Friday to beautiful weather, temperatures in the 70's(20'sC). We took a walk around the camp ground, and sniffed around the dog area. Then we went back to CeCe and ate dinner and  napped while Mama and Daddy went out to dinner with friends from their RV club.  When they got home, we went for a nice long walk and headed to bed.

Saturday was a mix of clouds and sun. We spent most of the day at White Sands National Park(more on that tomorrow). Since the weather was supposed to be stormy on Sunday, Mama and Daddy took us on a little ride around the town of Alamogordo.

Believe it or not(sarcasm), Alamogordo was established in 1898 when the railroad(in this case the El Paso and Northeastern Railways) were extended through the area. This seems like a theme for most of the small towns in New Mexico we have visited.

Alamogordo is named after a type of Cottonwood tree. It's literal meaning is "Fat Cottonwood"
(Gordo=Fat and Alamo=A poplar or cottonwood tree in Spanish).

Seems like the conditions in Alamogordo are also just right for growing Pistachios! There are a few pistachio farms in the area, but we wanted to visit the farm at McGinn's Pistachioland because ir boasts the World's Largest Pistachio! We were a little disappointed that is was a FAKE pistachio, but Mama thought it would make a fun picture.

After a long day of hiking and fun around town, we headed back to the campground. We all had some dinner and then sat outside to watch this pretty sunset!!

We were glad we got out and about on Saturday, because Sunday turned out to be stormy and VERY windy!!! There was lots of rain, snow, sleet and DUST! We went on a couple of little walks around the campground in between precipitation, and spent the rest of the day napping. The pawrents to another ride around town in the afternoon and when they got home we smelled ICE CREAM on their breath!!! Sheesh, they didn't even bring us any to share!!

Here is a video Mama put together:

You can also watch it on our YouTube Channel HERE

Even though we didn't get any ice cream, we are very thankful for the wonderful time we spent in Alamogordo and are so happy we get to spend time together traveling as a pack!

We'll be back to wrap up our trip tomorrow for a Nature Friday look at White Sands National Park!

  6. Lulu: "Ooh, that storm that hit you on Sunday must be the same one that blasted us on Saturday. Part of the 1 fell into the ocean up to the north of us!"
Java Bean: "Ayyy, that's terrible! The one what?"
    Lulu: "What?"
    Java Bean: "One what?"
Lulu: "What are you talking about?"
    Java Bean: "Never mind."
Lulu: "Anyway it looks like you got in some good sniffing out there and good wrestling too! Shame about the fake pistachio though. Maybe you could still eat it if you roasted it long enough?"
