Happy Travel Tuesday - Capital Metro and Union Station

Today we're going to flash back again to the pawrents trip to Washington DC and visit Union Station and Washington DC's Capital City Metro.

Construction began on the Capital City Metro in 1969 and in March of 1976 the red line was completed and in the following years the orange, blue, yellow, green and finally the silver line were added!

While staying in DC, the pawrents were within two blocks of a Metro stop. This would have made it a bunch easier to get around....if they had discovered it when they first got there.
Luckily, they found it during the last two days of their visit.
Silly pawrents!

Riding the Metro is easiest way for visitors to get around Washington and it has stops at popular tourist attractions around the city such as the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Museums. The pawrents and their tired paws took advantage of the trips to the Smithsonian a few times during their last couple of days in DC.

They also made their way to Washington DC's Union station, one of Mama's favorite places to visit in DC. Mama has visited Washington DC since the olden days of the 1970s when she was a wee lass and has always tries to visit Union Station when in town.

Union Station was designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907 making it one of the first of many "Union Stations" across the USA. Mama has visited it in the mid 70s, mid 80s, mid 90s and in 2011 and has to say, she has never seen it as empty as this trip.

After becoming an Historical Landmark in 1969, and has gone through several renovations over the years. Amtrak, the major transport service of Union Station, will be doing another renovation this year. Mama can't wait to see what it looks like during her next visit.

Of course, Mama made a little Metro, Union Station video for your viewing pleasure:

Feel free to view it on our YouTube Channel HERE

Thank you for joining us for our little Union Station, Capital Metro tour.

Have you ever ridden on a train or been to Union Station?

I really enjoyed the video, it shows the reason Mama always goes there, it is amazing. thanks for the visit to DC, I only travel by sofa, and this is all things I will never see, I did go there in 1953, but i was 9 years old, and the only memories i have are the planes in the ceilings of the Smithsonian, Martha and George Washington. a spanking on the steps belong Lincoln in the chair...

  3. Mom loved going to DC for layovers when she was flying, but she hasn't been there in years. The Metro is a wonderful way to get around and she used it all the time. One day we will get there to see it for ourselves.

  7. That is a very grand station and (Gail says) so clean and tidy. My predecessor Bouncing Bertie did lots of travelling by rail, but so far I have only been on a couple of short train journeys. Gail says that she's waiting for me to calm down a bit and for our train drivers to stop going on strike before she starts taking me on longer trips on the railways!

  9. That's so cool you two got to go...or did you? Our Mom loves DC, too. Dad hasn't ever been there, and neither have we, so we're hoping for a trip in the not-too-distant future! XOX Xena and my gang

  11. Lulu: "Our Dada says he remembers riding the subway in Washington, D.C., back in his younger days! And also the subway in Toronto! I think those are the only subways he's ever been on, since he somehow managed never to ride the one in New York City, and San Diego hasn't got one ..."
