Travel Tuesday - Chama, NM

When your Daddy needs to relax, and your Mama needs a break from the hot temperatures, a getaway to the mountains of Northern New Mexico in order!

For this getaway we headed to the little town of Chama, New Mexico and the Rio Chama RV Park. We were happy to be greeted by temperatures in the 70s instead of the 90s with only a few rain showers.

Nestled in the San Juan mountains, just South of the Colorado border, Chama has been a mining town, a logging town and most importantly a railroad town!

It is now home to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Originally the San Juan extension of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, the train running the railroad now carries tourists to see beautiful mountain views and the lovely scenery of the Cumbres Pass.

How fun is that! This trip we just watched the train go by, but the pawrents are hoping to hop on the train during our next visit.

Chama is a quaint little town, popular with campers escaping the desert heat during the warmer months.

Our favorite part of this trip, was the train that came through right behind our camp site twice a day. That and the beautiful Chama River rushing by underneath the bridge were big trip bonuses.

Mama put together a fun video of our time in Chama, NM

As always, feel free to visit our YouTube Channel HERE.

Between the trains, the cooler weather and the serene camp ground, this might have been one of our favorite trips this Summer.

Chama is another place we will try and get back to visit real soon!!

  6. the train video is wow wow wow. loved it, love the train. the most fun train ride ever was behind a steam engine. it is about 30 to 40 minutes from us now, it was 15 to 20 before our population exploded. it runs on week ends and changes up engines. and cars. I got to watch them throw coal in to make the steam come out and we got cinders in our hair. woo hoo... the sky in all your photos is bigger and more beautiful than spectacular, what ever that word would be.. this is my kind of place to visit. even just watching the train go by is an adventure

  8. What a lovely place to visit. We agree that trains make lots of scary noises. There are train tracks near where we take walks sometimes and when they blow their horn it almost makes us jump out of our collars!

  12. We could live with some 70 degree weather! That looks like a lovely place to visit. Bet it will be fun riding the train next time you're there, too. That river sure does look muddy, though. XOX Xena and my pack
